March 7, 2019, Winter Weather Advisory, Half The World Will Become Nearsighted

Atmosphere:

The NWS in Louisville advises that roads could get slippery this evening through Friday morning as a shot of 1 to 2 inches of snow falls. Typical early spring weather over the weekend as the new season takes on the old in their yearly bout of thunderstorms. Saturday’s high will flirt with 60.

Art:

Ferdinand du Puigaudeau (1864-1930). Title (I think) Trees, tamaris and poppy fields, 1915.

Thought:

I just re-upped my membership in the 20/20 club thanks to some high-tech engineering and medical skill that replaced my aging natural lenses with a lens called “Symfony.”

I am amazed and grateful to have the sharp, clear vision I thought was lost forever. Because of this wonderful experience, any talk of eyesight catches my ear lately. Today I heard the wife of an eye doctor discussing the surge in nearsightedness. This study from a couple of years ago makes the case that the human eye was never designed to look at things so close for so long as we do today, nor was it meant to switch back and forth quickly from near viewing to far.

In 2050, Half the World Will Be Nearsighted

“Researchers expect eyesight to worsen across the globe thanks to more screens and less time outdoors.”

From The Atlantic.

“The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists.”
