February 23, 2019, Cumberland Falls At Flood, Forests Stir The Imagination

The warm front to our south has not pushed very far north. That has kept the steady rain concentrated in south-central parts of the state. There have been some spectacular drone videos of Cumberland Falls.

When we finally get heavy rain it will most likely come in this evening’s thunderstorms. In addition, the experts say there is enough wind shear in the atmosphere to spin up tornados.

High today will be 60.

Félix Edouard Vallotton (December 28, 1865 – December 29, 1925) was a Swiss/French painter and printmaker associated with the collective known as Les Nabis. He was an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut. More.

I have had the opportunity to make my home in various environments in my beloved Kentucky; urban, suburban, countryside and, most recently, the woodlands.

A couple of delightful weekends in a vacation cabin near the Daniel Boone National Forest inspired my wife and me to think about what it would be like to live full-time in the woods, in much the same way a pleasant afternoon on a lake can drive landlubbers to buy a boat. Neither of us had any real experience to prepare us.

When we decided the time had come to try life among trees, we built a home on a wooded ridge in Oldham County. The back of our house is surrounded by deep woods with a steep fall-away to a draw carved by a wet weather stream.

We often find ourselves in silent gratitude, sharing moments for which we have no words. I am not enough of a poet to tell you about seasons, moon, mist, rain, frogs, birds, stars, shadows and light. I share a life with plants that tower above me, whisper with the slightest breeze and roar in even minor storms.

Some things can only be experienced through daily immersion. Now that I am here, I understand why people are inspired by forests.

“From Robin Hood to the Faraway Tree, woodlands and storytelling have been intertwined since tales started to be spun. What is it about trees that captivates fiction writers?” From The Guardian.

“Rejoice evermore.
Pray without ceasing.
In everything give thanks.
I am not all the way capable of so much,

but those are the right instructions.”

Wendell Berry
