February 18, 2019, Rainy Week Ahead, Who Declared This “President’s Day”? Nobody.

Atmosphere:

Today will be cloudy, a few flurries, high 36 in Oldham County. Rain, plenty of it, starting tomorrow night. There will be concern for areas south of us as a stalled front is going to bring repeated waves of rain falling upon already saturated ground.

Art:

Hugo Fredrik Salmson (7 July 1843, Stockholm – 1 August 1894, Lund) was a Swedish painter; known for figures and genre scenes. “Something in the air”, oil on canvas, 60.00 x 47.00 cm, private collection. (Notes: The detail in the blue dress. The weight and texture of the fabrics. Who/which is Rene’? So many places on which the eye can alight.)

Thought:

Today, we celebrate George Washington’s Birthday.

The first time I heard it called President’s Day was in a TV mattress commercial.

“Contrary to popular belief, neither Congress nor the President has ever stipulated that the name of the holiday observed as Washington’s Birthday be changed to “President’s Day.” Read more in The National Archives.

“Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains taken to bring it to light.”
