GOES East infrared since midnight Jan. 1.

It is hard to believe that I have been operating this weather station for fifteen years. What was once an obsure hobby has turned into a very popular interest for thousands, worldwide. Weather stations are everywhere and now make up a huge fabric of the data used to analyze the atmosphere and make forecasts.

The New Year brings a fresh start. OldhamCountyWeather.com is now KYbreeze.com. The weather will be a starting point for what I expect to be a reflection of a broader range of interests.

On the technical side, I no longer require a dedicated PC to receive, process and upload data. Those chores are now handled by a tiny device that is integrated into the station console. Other changes include a mobile solution for checking current conditions which can be accessed either through the menu or by clicking on the top banner on a phone or tablet.

Over the past year, my interest has moved to the reception of weather satellite transmissions from space through my own antennas, including the beautiful images we receive from NOAA’s GOES series of geostationary satellites.

It is important to say that I am NOT a meteorologist and I have high admiration for the education they hold and the important work they do, especially those at the National Weather Service. Like millions of others, I am a weather enthusiast and find joy in observing and measuring what I consider to be the heartbeat of nature.

For last year’s words belong to last year’s language
And next year’s words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
